Teaching Portfolio

A portfolio allows a perspective employer to view samples of your work and get a closer look at how you implemented your teaching philosophy and learn more about you than only a resume may convey. It is a collection of documents that describes the multiple aspects of your teaching ability. It shows what you have done in your own work as well as your professional development. You portfolio should include a table of contents that allows a perspective employer to easily navigate your portfolio. There are several sections that should be included in your portfolio and table of contents.
  • You should include your resume: Including your resume allows employers to quickly view your resume while looking at your portfolio.

  • You should include your Philosophy of Education: This will allow perspective employers to become acquainted with your personal views on education. This understanding will allow them to know whether or not you fit into their program or school district.

  • You should include copies of your teaching certificates: This give proof of your certification areas (this is only for K12 schools)

  • You should include copies of certificates of your professional development: Proving that you have continued to better yourself as an educator makes you look more appealing to potential employers. Professional development also keeps you up-to-date on theory and pedagogies.

  • You should include Transcripts: Most employers require a copy of your transcripts, so providing these before you are asked leaves a positive impression on your employer.

  • You should include Letters of Recommendation: These letters will help you have a leg up on the competition. Providing letters of recommendation proves that you have been a valuable employee and will be a valuable addition to any other faculty.

  • You should include a list of your References: Providing a list of references before being asked for them both makes you appear more desirable and may expedite the hiring process.
